OUR VISION
At South Dakota Service Dogs, we see a future where no veteran or first responder has to fight their battles alone.
We envision a world where every hero in need is matched with a highly trained service dog—a companion that brings healing, independence, and renewed purpose.
We are committed to reducing suicide rates among our nation’s heroes by harnessing the powerful bond between humans and canines.
And we’re building a strong, united network of partners, donors, and advocates—organizations and individuals who believe, like we do, that no one gets left behind.

THE NEED
For many veterans and first responders, the battle doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.
PTSD, anxiety, and trauma can steal their peace, strain family relationships, and make everyday life feel overwhelming. Worse yet, it can take years to receive a service dog through traditional programs—years they can’t afford to lose. While some struggle in silence, others watch their quality of life erode, their independence slip away, and their connection to loved ones fade.
This isn’t just about preventing suicide—it’s about restoring freedom, rebuilding families, and helping our heroes live full, purpose-driven lives again. At South Dakota Service Dogs, we believe they deserve better—and we’re here to answer that call.
HOW WE'RE SOLVING IT

At South Dakota Service Dogs, our mission is simple: to empower veterans and first responders through the life-changing bond of a service dog.
We train and pair highly skilled service dogs with individuals battling the mental and emotional toll of PTSD, trauma, and operational stress —helping them regain independence, confidence, and connection.
But we go beyond the dog. Each team receives hands-on training, mentorship, and support, creating a powerful partnership built on trust, consistency, and growth.
We’re committed to keeping costs as low as possible for those
we serve—because healing should never be out of reach.
This is about more than service dogs. It’s about restoring lives, rebuilding families, and giving our heroes the tools to thrive again.

Hiei is my little shadow (literally what his name means!). Outside the vest, he's our fluffy boy. In the
vest, he's my savior. He makes living life comfortable.
