HOW TO BEGIN THE PROCESS

INQUIRY>INITIAL CONTACT>ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION>
PROGRAM INTRODUCTION>COMMITMENT AND MATCH

South Dakota Service Dogs is committed to providing highly trained service dogs to veterans and first responders living with PTSD or related challenges. Our process is designed to ensure the best possible match between dog and handler—and starts with a few important steps.

Step 1: Complete the Inquiry Form Below

The first step is to fill out the inquiry form at the bottom of this page. This form helps us gather basic information and determine whether you may be a fit for our program.

Please note: Submitting an inquiry form does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Each              application is carefully reviewed by our team on a case-by-case basis.

Step 2: Initial Contact & Review

After receiving your form, our Executive Director will reach out to you. This typically happens within a few weeks. During this time, we’ll answer questions, clarify details, and begin to assess whether our program is the right fit for your needs.

Step 3: Verification & Background Check

All applicants will be required to:

  • Undergo a background check

  • Provide proof of military service (such as a DD214 or valid military ID), or

  • Verify status as a current or former first responder

This ensures the integrity of our program and protects the well-being of all participants.

Step 4: Program Introduction & Observation

If your application moves forward, we’ll arrange an opportunity for you to observe one of our local trainers in action. This gives you a firsthand look at what’s involved in the training process and what will be expected of you.

Step 5: Commitment & Matching

Once you’ve been accepted into the program and understand the responsibilities involved, our team will begin working on the best pathway forward for your unique situation.

Already Have a Dog?

If you’re applying with a dog you already own and hope to have them trained as your service dog, a full evaluation by our training staff is required before acceptance into the program.

To be considered, your dog must:

  • Be at least 6 months old

  • Demonstrate basic obedience skills

  • Be fully up to date on vaccinations

Please note: Not all dogs are suitable for service work, even with training. However, we’d be happy to assess your dog and provide honest feedback on their potential. Our goal is to set both you and your dog up for success, whether that is with our organization or another!
