  • Where are you located?
South Dakota Service Dogs is proudly based in Rapid City, South Dakota, with our primary training facility located inside the Uptown Rapid Mall. At this time, we are only able to provide training and support to applicants located in Rapid City and the surrounding areas. Our hands-on, in-person training model requires close proximity to ensure the highest quality outcomes for both dogs and handlers. As we grow, we hope to expand our reach—but for now, our focus remains local, where we can deliver the most impact.
  • What is the cost to me?
At South Dakota Service Dogs, we believe our heroes shouldn’t bear the financial burden of training a service dog. That’s why we cover the full cost of training for all dogs accepted into our program. Specifics regarding program expectations and financial responsibilities will be discussed during your initial inquiry call.
  • What is SDSD's investment into each dog?
The national cost to fully train a service dog ranges from $15,000 to $50,000, depending on the level of specialization required. In addition, annual veterinary care for a dog between 6 months and 2 years of age typically averages $700 to $1,500. At South Dakota Service Dogs, we understand that every situation is unique—all cost-related specifics will be discussed in detail during your initial onboarding call.
  • What if I have other animals?
Our service dogs are routinely trained in environments with other dogs and are exposed to a variety of social settings throughout their development. Our trainers can offer a variety of solutions to promote a harmonious environment for both the service dog and your other pets.
  • What is the difference between a Service Dog, and Emotional Support Animal and a Therapy Dog?
Service Dogs Trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability (e.g., PTSD, mobility issues) Protected by ADA law — allowed in public places (stores, restaurants, planes) Highly trained and task-focused Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) Provide comfort just by being present — no task training required Not protected by ADA — not allowed in most public places May have limited housing protections Therapy Dogs Trained to provide comfort to others (e.g., in hospitals, schools, disaster zones) Work alongside a handler to support groups, not just one person Not ADA-protected — only allowed where they’re invited
  • What Else Should I Know?
Training a service dog is a serious commitment—for both the dog and the handler. The full process can take anywhere from 9 to 18 months, depending on individual needs and progress. If you know you’ll be relocating, unavailable, or unable to commit for a significant portion of that time, we kindly ask that you wait to begin the process until you can fully participate. This ensures the best outcome for you, the dog, and the integrity of the program.
